Hello again. Following my walk I did a tour of Rottnest Island which is about 18km from the mainland. First it was a 35 minute ferry ride from Fremantle, then some free time before we got on the train up to the Oliver Hill Battery (established to protect Perth during WWII, the original train track was used to haul ammunition up to the guns - where we had a quick tour), back down on the train, then a bus tour of the island before returning to the main settlement before more free time before the return ferry journey.
It was larger than I thought - being about a 22 km bike ride around the island. The weather was great and so was the scenery once you got away from the holiday homes and shops. Of course we saw lots of wildlife, including some quokkas, and a lot of bikes (as it is mainly car free). In fact the main injuries suffered on the island are due to riders injuring themselves due to the fact that they don't know how to ride bikes properly (this was in evidence as we were going around the island on the bus - they were all over the place. I was also nearly run over by a Chinese couple who appeared to have no control over their bikes). The bus driver also told off a few tourists who were feeding or even patting the quokkas which is prohibited as it causes them harm.
It's a great destination with plenty of beaches, walks and bike rides and even a local bus transport system. Another great place in WA!
